The links between politics and soccer in countries that care deepest about soccer have been suggested for years and were detailed in an extensive 2010 report by Cecilia Mo, Andrew Healy and Neil Malhotra of Stanford University.
“The thrill of this team that they care so deeply about winning, they… sort of think – ‘you know what, our country is actually on the right track,’” Mo, now assistant professor of political science at Cal-Berkeley, said in a telephone interview. “There’s no need to change things when things are going well. If they win, then that is going to favor the administration that’s in power.”
